Liberal Democrats and the Council Tax

Liberal Democrats are committed to replacing the Council Tax with a Local Income Tax, based on a person’s ability to pay.

However for the time being we have to work with the current unfair system of Council Tax. Under the final years of Labour rule prior to 2003 Council Tax rises averaged 9%. Since the Liberal Democrats took control Council Tax rises have averaged 4.7%. If elected on Thursday Liberal Democrats in Luton have pledged to continue reducing the rate of increases in Council Tax.
